Description
Wallets of the period came with many features and configurations but seem to generally fall into two popular sizes. This is the smaller size which fits in both the large inside pocket and the smaller coat pockets of the common coats. Seen in documented soldier’s and citizen’s effects in all references. The wallet folds out to multiple sections. With an accordion space with pockets for typical items such as folding money, chits, postage stamps, tickets, unframed photos, etc. A larger flat section made of light colored thin calfskin folds down and also out on each side to hold folded documents or other mementos of value, such as letters, a lock of hair, etc. Wallet has excellent patina but is still sound, unlike many which have been used up due to excessive moisture. Interesting feature is the tab which is held in place using an early eyelet/grommet piece as a type of rivet. Perhaps there was another function? Neat element and absolutely original to the piece. Solid example for personal item/effects display c.1860s.
