Closely resembling the pattern on the documented 3rd New Hampshire Regiment winter mitten is this fine addition to the winter gear inventory. (original pictured for comparison – we have also added a couple of pictures of our mitten laid out and displayed as the original so you can see how accurate the pattern is) A standard period pattern mitten with a nice long wrist and plenty of room for any size hand. With an inseam sewn end this is a typical common mitten type of the period. Civilian mittens were common in the ranks, sent from home and as a result fully appropriate for any impression. The shooting mitten pattern, with it’s additional trigger finger as prescribed by the war department for civilian non-contract production, is certainly appropriate for the soldier in the ranks, convenient and practical, and likely preferred by them, but yet surely outnumbered by the common civilian mitten sent from home, privately purchased, or otherwise acquired. Any myriad of patterns were made during the era with no particular documented dominance in the marketplace, but here is a great medium weight wool mitten copying the design and pattern of a rare surviving pair of soldier documented civilian mittens. I am guessing that New Hampshire men new a thing or two about winter fashion as well as keeping warm.
