A product advertised as “the Necessity of the Age” this was one of, if not the first, commercially manufactured toilet papers in the United States.    Sold in packages of flat sheets originally with a water mark bearing makers name on each! This our latest copyrighted label version of this product based upon exciting new research we had the opportunity to pursue. Recently we had the privilege of examining a mostly intact label from the oldest example we believe extant of an actual partial Gayetty’s Medicated Paper package made specifically for travel and marketed as a pocket version of the earlier larger wrappers. (This in no way detracts from the authenticity of our previous, also copyrighted, label based on period print faithfully taken from newspaper advertising broadsides c. 1859 and, like this version, meticulously made in period style with appropriate materials down to the specific period package folding method. In fact it in many ways supports it and we will likely produce it again on an alternating basis. We simply modified that label into a size more practical for the purpose as  Gayetty’s was originally sold in wrappers containing 500 sheets) Against the internet pontificators we asserted the fact that our research indicated a “traveller’s” version was produced and distributed during the period although no surviving example or label image had yet been found. (we examined a later “pocket” example circa 1880-1890 in cardstock with a slip tongue  closure which was actually distributed to troops during the Span Am war and WWI. This version bore the later trademark so we did not use it at the time) The example we examined most recently had some of the earliest text from the 1859 broadside and some of the configuration and the color scheme of the 1880-90 package. It is our opinion that this package dates from the 1860s-1870s period and we are very excited to produce it for you now with only a minimal amount of supposition to make up for a few minor missing pieces . We also include a copy of a Feb. 3, 1859  NY Daily Tribune front page which proudly proclaimed that even the President and his Cabinet used Gayetty’s Medicated Paper in the White House! (Our previous label was pirated and copied extensively. PLEASE, help preserve the integrity of our living history community and identify and callout any and all efforts to also pirate and copy this effort.  Stealing such property and effort from those who passionately purse such virtually profitless research must be exposed if such work is to continue on your behalf) Soft facial quality tissue, for those wishing to forego the total “emersion” irritation of less friendly compositions without sacrificing authenticity. Keep that Harper’s for reading and fire starter material! Beware the knock-offs! – like many items in our product line – some copies and inferior attempts at similar packaging and labeling are out there – but our quality and authentic attention to period detail, inside and out, never duplicated!
