The very popular civilian “wheel” type cap often referred to in the period as a “mechanic’s” cap. More substantial than the simple and quite popular workman’s cap which we sometimes still carry, this cap has more construction parts and is a high quality artisan production. The top, made in a variety of available materials during the period, is a basic wheel type pattern cap body, made in six pieces with a stiff interior head band. It is not as large as the crown on the earlier army issue forage cap and more malleable allowing it to be worn personalized in as many configurations as can be imagined. (we have endeavored to illustrate a few based on original photos – in studying images of fellows in such caps there seems to be no end to their style and\/or adornment, including feathers and badges) The visor is in the curved front type, similar to the army’s McDowell pattern, and made of stout leather with an applied sewn leather edge. Each cap is lined in appropriate period material, the jean wool and cotton in natural muslin and the plain wool in brown cotton. These caps are seen in photos with side buttons and chin straps complete with buckles, with faux ornamental visor straps and buttons and with nothing at all. NOTE: Due to many requests to purchase this hat without a chin strap or side buttons, or with chinstrap sans the buckle, or with different buttons, these hats are now being shipped with side buttons and chin strap with buckle included, BUT NOT ATTACHED<\/em>. That way you can do so if you wish to, remove the buckle, or leave it off altogether as desired. (Sorry, we cannot sew them on for you at order, we simply do not have the time once our seamstresses and men are done making them and on to the next scheduled item run. There are various methods to attach the chin strap, the easiest involves simply<\/em> putting the buckle on the front half of the two piece strap if desired, putting the button shanks through the pre-cut holes and whip stitching the buttons to each side of the cap in the position desired. Please contact us if you need further explanation or information on alternative methods. An inability to do this or locate a person who can do it for you is not a misrepresentation of the product. Shipping for a return based on this issue is the responsibility of the purchaser)\u00a0 The standard side buttons included are either our high quality domed plain brass on the jean wool and cotton caps or matching cloth covered wool on plain wool caps. The sweat band is sewn in and made of thin brown leather. (some of our common work caps may feature a pieced sweatband. This feature we observed on an original period hat. Presumably done to cut wastage and reduce cost for the expensive thin finish leather used to make them. May have been a replacement, either way likely for the same reason.) These caps are seen in pre-war and wartime period photos, posed and otherwise, worn by tradesman of all sorts, boatman, dock workers, teamsters, militia, soldiers of both sides,\u00a0 ruffian and respectable. (as to soldiers, the navy blue cap is seen worn by northern soldiers and militia, early war and pre-war, including a few officers, even Southern, throughout the war. The various colors are seen more commonly in the southern ranks regardless of period and the civilian world universally. The jean wool caps will bear markings for D.B. Camp of Savannah’s pre-war firm of Camp and Robinson and the plain wool and cotton caps are labeled for Baldwin and Randall of St. Louis, both documented pre-war and wartime dealers. We are offering four sizes 7, 7 1\/4, and 7 1\/2 and 7 3\/4. (these translate into a circumference of the head measurement of 22″, 22 3\/4″, 23 1\/2″, and 24 1\/4″ respectively. This is considered a snug measurement not a loose fitting measurement.
