While this shirt was produced in the period with the fixed collar in both rounded and squared patterns as we offer, here we offer the shirt, also as it was available in the period, with the plain banded neck together with a separate cotton squared folding collar. This allowed the wearer to forego the collar when not needed in order to avoid soiling, and also to change soiled collars without the expense of cleaning the entire shirt. Collars were available during the period from throw away paper and cardstock, to soft materials and those with stiffeners added or inserted, including painted metal! They attached with simple sewn on buttons, to ornate studs inserted through buttonholes in both the neckband and collar.
