Small bent stem clay smoking pipe with classic basket weave on the bowl and fancy lines on the stem. This a classic and one of the most common pipe designs, mass produced from the 18th century through the early 20th century. Same in design as our other basket weave pipe but overall length is just 3 1\/2″. These smaller pipes were made for the quick smoke, such as when the soldier had a short break on the march, etc. They also used less tobacco, were easy to carry, priced cheap, or even given away with tobacco purchases, etc., as a promotional item – thus they were economical and popular for all classes. These were often marketed to soldiers along with the diminutive liquor flasks also sometimes know in the soldier’s vernacular as “last rites flasks”. Each piece bears the period label of S. Rosenfeld & Sons, Baltimore, a documented dealer in such goods. (unused original pipes we have examined, like many other period items, have born a such a pasted dealer\/seller label as opposed to the actual maker) These pipes are made in Germany by a family firm who relatively recently discovered the original molds for the pipes which have been in the family, some for over two centuries. The kiln fired pipes are made on the original molds utilizing the original production process. They are made of rolled clay pressed into the molds and the result is considered a better, cooler smoking pipe with a longer life. (Note; As in many originals examined, the stems on these pipe do sometimes gain a slight curve to the side when laid to dry prior to being fired in the kiln.
