In the inventory of any period HQ , Hospital office, QM, Commissary, Ordinance, Sutler, civilian business, &tc., &tc. – basically any place that generated regularly required paperwork. (ie., the ARMY and NAVY!) Typically made of heavy-duty crockery with a pour spout. Closed with a cork. These came in all sizes from small to huge – this is the most common size range seen, small enough for the Regt\/Battalion or Brigade level. These bottles were also used in the period for all sorts of chemical and liquids which needed to be stored yet used regularly. They are seen with pharmaceutical and photographic provenance a well. Almost universally imported during the period, this one is particularly nice in that the maker identifies it as specifically made for ink. Stamped at the base “BRIDGE’S INKS, LONDON, NE”. Nice cream color with a great finish. Also stamped on the back for the crockery maker “I” over the oval reading “J. STIFF & SONS, LAMBETH.” Only a small very old little chip at the spout, which does not inhibit function, keeps this one from being priced significantly higher. Still, quite a nice example with the INK stamp as most examples only bear the crock makers marks with unknown intended use.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
This is the period vessel utilized to store larger quantities of ink to fill the smaller desk-top wells.
