This is the same basic design as our civilian pattern notched collar sack coat with one exterior breast pocket and two lower exterior pockets with pocket flaps. Made of the same higher quality wool but made about 4 1\/2″ longer in the skirt, falling mid-thigh, closer to the length of a frock coat. This longer sack coat was popular with many men as evident in period photos, as the longer model was considered a more cultured and higher grade appearance. Not too fancy for the common man, but a step above the outdoor manual labor class. Split back in order to facilitate movement when mounted. Likely also provides a bit more warmth in cooler weather, yet the loose fits does not add appreciably contribute to overheating in warmer weather. Two lower outside pockets and one breast pocket make for a classic Civil War era and early war look. All button holes are hand sewn<\/em>. This pattern notched collar was universally popular and the lower pocket flaps also added a flare of subtle class.\u00a0 (flaps can also be tucked in for a simple slash pocket look) Great period style with a vest and tie, or without either in the warmer months. Interior is lined in our documented medium brown, or black cotton depending on what we have on hand, and has one inseam breast pocket. Available with stamp\/label of any of our documented wartime and pre-war southern or northern clothiers. Because of the length it has a five button front and three button fully functional<\/em> cuff – matching cloth covered buttons. NOTE: These coats are not sized according to modern standardized models which often include more generous “vanity inches” in the process. Please be sure of your size requirements prior to purchase and disregard other sizing models. If you are unsure please email us with questions. We suggest you take your actual chest measurement, or the largest measurement of your torso, over the clothing items you intend to wear under the coat<\/em>, and compare them to the actual measurement of the coat in the listing – then choose the coat which offers you the amount of room and fit you desire. The actual measurement of the chest of these coats is 3″ larger than the chest size indicated, ie., a “chest size 42 in.” has an actual chest measurement of about 45″, etc. The buttons can be moved to gain 1\/2 to 1″. This coat has straight side seams with no fitted waist taper – it is a true “sack” coat. The sack coat was generally designed to fit much more loosely than the frock or even civilian common coat in order to facilitate movement and less expensive manufacture and fitting. Some men, not subject to such duties, did prefer to have them tailored. Although our clothing items have found widespread approval – uniforming and outer clothing is not our primary business and until now we have restricted sale of such items to over the counter sales at events and at the shop, where the purchaser has the opportunity to try on the item before purchase.
