Based on decades of photographic research and a couple of documented original shirts extant, we are excited to offer you another option of our latest shirt production. This is an unbleached cotton shirt in a standard period pattern with falling squared collar and gusseted sleeves.\u00a0 Attached to the front are two breast pockets made of remnant woven checked cotton, this run being red and white as opposed to our first run of green and white. The shirt body is machine sewn and the rounded bottom pockets are handsewn on with visible crude topstitching applied around the edge. All of the button holes are handsewn on the shirt and the pockets. This represents the documented mid 19th century soldier’s practice of sewing pockets on the common private purchase or provided\/issued shirt in order to provide improved practicality for the garment in the field. (many of the more common commercially manufactured shirts of the period did not come with pockets) Research indicates this was done with whatever material could be had from material remnants to liberated curtains. This material fits the bill as it was used for shirts, poke sacks, curtains, dresses, &tc. &tc. To further present the detail of the practice we have placed our Gibson pattern small sized wood buttons on the shirt and our genuine polished bone shirt buttons on the separate application of the pocket closure. (Published research has again confirmed original examples extant of this type shirt and drawers with southern documentation to Richmond wartime production using the Gibson button. Gibson Brothers provided a massive number of these buttons to the Richmond Clothing Bureau between 1862 and 1865. This bone button is also well documented in use during the period for shirts and drawers) The shirt is patterned after shirts issued to state and national troops during the war and is a fine example of the commercially manufactured version of the era available for private purchase as well. The material is cotton\/muslin representing a common durable utility shirt material of the period.\u00a0 This shirt is not produced by us to represent a QMD issued<\/em> shirt – although it is quite appropriate for such use. Contrary to the dogma spewed forth by some cracker box preachers, such shirts were produced, distributed, and yes even issued,<\/em> by some entities in plain cotton\/muslin. We are marking these shirts with simple manufacturers stamp of Noah Walker of Baltimore, due to his documented distribution presence and production work in Richmond also. Walker is a unique and special documented pre-war and wartime maker and dealer in “Citizens and Military Clothing”, as his period advertisements indicated. (note: See Sizing Chart on Home Page for measurement information. These shirts are not pre-washed – if not washed properly in cold to warm water by hand or delicate cycle and hung dry, shrinkage will likely occur. If washed properly as indicated, field tests showed very little to no shrinkage was detected) As these represent a personalized shirt this is A VERY LIMITED RUN!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
