A product that was well known in the horse community, including many in the military service well before the war, through the war and after. Designed to protect the man from shedding horse hair and dirt whilst grooming the mount or performing other cavalry related fatigues. Specific to the Civil War period the “Stable Frock” was enumerated in the 1861 Regulations. (see archival photo – research reference thanks in part to my good friend of over 50 years and brother in Christ, Michael “Mick” Woodcock, whose credentials as a historian, museum curator, cavalryman, officer, and Chaplain are legendary)\u00a0 We are a Sutler, this is not intended to represent a QM or Regulation issued item, but a private purchase equivalent closely resembling the same. Many military issued items were patterned after such civilian items and vice versa. Outside of US Regulars such private purchase examples would have been the standard. In any installation or long term camp having been established with baggage wagons brought in, the possibility of these coats being present amongst the enlisted ranks is quite possible. With officer’s baggage, they could have been much more routine. I have used one for decades in garrison and in the field, as they are relatively lightweight and can double as a nice summer weight camp or campaign coat. We have patterned this coat after a citizens example which is basically in the sack coat pattern so it can be worn for any duty desired. In grooming I have found it’s use essential to protect the rest of my kit. The regulation coat was a bit longer, however this version is still adequately protective extending a full 5-6″ below the length of the standard sack coat. The body of the coat is straight side seamed like the sack and has a standard rounded front falling collar. The sleeves are standard pattern. There is one long pocket on the right side for brush, etc. It is made of nice medium weight white cotton drill and is unlined. Closes with five pressed brass four-hole buttons. Later regulations called for cotton duck and sometimes included overalls – a rather heavy and hot affair. Some post war frocks were reportedly actually made from wartime surplus shelter tents. Whilst an oversize purchase could accommodate wear over the wool sack coat this is not the design or intention of this product but to cover the shirt, vest, upper trousers, etc. Ours are marked for Holton and Martin Tarpaulin Depot, a company who had government contracts for haversacks and tents and made all manner of canvas products, campaign equipment and clothing items.<\/p>\n
