Quite rare book written by Harriet Hamline Bigelow (1800-1879) in 1856 and published in 1857. 1st edition.
\nIntended to illustrate the inherent evils and brutality of American slavery. Harriet Bigelow was steeped in the tradition of the most stalwarts of the abolitionist movement positing slavery as an inherently sinful practice perpetrated on Africans and enabled in America from the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the Constitution and subsequent legislation and legal decisions representing compromises with it’s proponents and an unwillingness to take a resolute stand against them regardless of the consequence. A poignant illustration in the front of the book carries this theme through to the year of copyright in 1856 as a great moral degradation of the white race as well as a great injustice and tortuous crime perpetrated against those enslaved. Harriet Bigelow, was a contemporary of Harriet Beecher Stowe of “Uncle Tom\u2019s Cabin” fame (1852) and a generational abolitionist along with her husband Dr. Isaac Bigelow. While Stowe’s book, presented in 1852, enjoyed initial widespread popularity and took fire in England as well, as the Civil War loomed it had moved on to theater adaptations and other venues with character interpretations that began to receive some criticism for characterization meant originally to show southern prejudices as stereotyping and racist themselves, being extrapolated upon northern whites and a patronizing northern society. The doctor was a personal friend of famed abolitionist and publisher Henry Lloyd Garrison. Their movement also carried this same zeal and philosophy simultaneously for the rights and dignity of women in society and women’s suffrage in particular. Based on stated scripture and Biblical truths, it presents the lives of slave families and their white masters in stark reality, illustrating the issue in both compassionate and moral contexts.
