Rare 1st Edition.<br \/>\nNehemiah Adams was a one-time abolitionist who travelled to the South before the Civil War and supposedly <em>studied<\/em> southern slavery first hand and reported on &#8220;facts&#8221; of slave life and culture. In reality his book was an attempt to answer popular books in the North that opened the eyes of many to the horrors and evils of the practice.\u00a0 \u00a0If not already a predeliction disguised in a somewhat amoral approach to abolition prior to his travels, in writing the book he displayed a white supremist philosophy attempting to justify the practice in a manner that would later be a significant part of the chorus in support of the post war \u201cLost Cause\u201d movement of southern apologetics. Promoted as an \u201cobjective\u201d look at the \u201crealities\u201d of slavery in the South it emphasized close relationships in families with their slaves and compassionate patriarchal care along with out of context Biblical references and warped extrapolations of scripture steeped in self-righteous rationalization. Based on some factual emotional experiences of the relationships between some certain slaves and some certain slave-owners, the morality of ownership and control of another is devoid of recognition of any level of equality or in kind human inclusion. It was considered by many as an answer to \u201cUncle Tom\u2019s Cabin\u201d by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
