Nice coarsely woven checked muslin\/cotton fabric shirt in well documented period pattern with standard gusseted sleeves with rise and fall folded over collar with typical squared corners. All button holes are hand-sewn. This batch comes with matching original china white glass buttons with green rims. This is the most basic and common commercially manufactured pattern shirt of the period with standard underarm gussets and two breast pockets machine top-stitched in place. Consistent with our commitment to break the “cookie cutter” mould that seems to dominate so much of the period reproduction culture, we make our “made from home” or commercially manufactured “ready-made shirts” in a variety of documented period\u00a0 styles, patterns, and colors. To provide a reasonably priced quality shirt with a great look and no sacrifice of authenticity is our goal. In response to a recent inquiry concerning cuff button placement, in examining quite a few original shirts over the decades we have taken notice that there seemed to be quite a diversity in button v. button hole, and cuff slit placement on sleeves, especially those of the less formal varieties, as opposed to the universal norm today, which attempts to mimick the appearance of the formal french cuff.\u00a0 \u00a0Accordingly we have placed our cuffs and buttons with some diversity also, but the slit routinely placed on the portion of the wrist most easily accessible on the inside with the off hand, as the utility shirt should be configured.<\/p>\n
Note: After examining many documented original period shirts, we looked long and hard to find the coarse woven checked materials we desired to make our common shirts out of. Combined with our period method dying process, we are confident that the result is a very authentic and uniquely available representation of the common quality material available of the day. Because the material is produced in the manner of less refined coarse weave cottons, in order to better represent the quality that was mass produced during the period – as opposed to the higher tech produced “finished” cotton shirts of the modern era – there is occasionally some minor anomalies found in the weave. (skipping a thread, small thread pulls, balls, etc) They are not “damaged”, and if discovered after the garment is in production these very minor anomalies are simply left as is on the garment as they represent the types of issues we have observed on similar period undamaged fabric as well. Such is the price of authenticity in common mass produced Civil War era material culture. Dogma prevails within the “authentic” reproduction industry pushing predominantly handsewn shirts as the norm of the period. The fact is that while cherished and kept handmade “sent from home” shirts are well documented in collections, a more objective look at the material culture of the period as opposed to these individual pieces, reveals that Ready-Made clothing proliferated the market as well as the fact that individual household and sewing guild owned sewing machines were relatively common. (yes, even in the South) While some individuals were less skilled in using machines for some small work, the only specific part which was all but universally hand done was the buttonhole. (research suggests that some European manufacturing was beginning to practice in this area also) If you want a “sent from home” completely hand made shirt that is fine, but machine sewn our partially machine sewn are equally well-researched and authentic for the consumable shirt of the period. (please see our hand finished shirts) Buttons are another subject – we occasionally use original buttons from our vast collection of period examples on some of our shirts. Calico buttons are fine, documented and cool. If you like them great, but, again sound research method suggests, while somewhat popular – they certainly weren’t dominant.<\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
