C. Infantry Regiment. He stencilled it  at the time in fancy script &#8220;W. M. GRAHAM, COL., U.S. VOL., 1862&#8221;. Previously he was a captain of Artillery in the Regular Army and stayed in the post war Regular Army reaching the level of Brigadier General, R.A. (breveted Brig. Genl. for his Civil war Service and Maj. Genl. for Span Am War service) The Testament is typical CW  era production with pressed black cloth cover published by Claremont Manufacturing Company. An old line company, one of the earliest beginning Testament publication in the 1830s and continuing through the war. A very prominent company in the trade. Moderate wear and age discoloring.
