(our bag bears his Baltimore mark and establishment date – many of his goods in the North continued to be made in Baltimore while distributed in his other locations) By the war years he had goods distribution with establishments in Baltimore, D.C., and Illinois in the North and Norfolk, Petersburg, and Richmond in the South. A prolific producer of “Ready Made Clothing” and uniforms as well as canvas items and other goods he became the second richest man in Baltimore. His Southern establishments reportedly made a considerable amount of CS uniforms during the war while he continued to produce high quality clothing and Union Officer’s uniforms in the North. (His son served in the Confederate Army as Lt. Colonel) A very basic and “common” type production item for the period. A solid, sturdy and simply handsome bag with a pattern documented to both Southern and Northern state units, militia and civilian use, wartime and pre-war.
