The label is printed directly on the outer package just as in the original, not applied afterward. (Only a few unnoticeable adjustments have been made to the label in order to avoid any possibility of legal issues with the reproduction. Many tobacco companies merged or were bought out by larger conglomerates who still have certain rights) The paper color and texture is a perfect match for the original and the exterior of the paper is coated in our own proprietary process in order to achieve the finish as it was when originally prepared for sale. It is inner lined with reproduction Civil War era newsprint around a rigid cardstock tube providing the integrity of the shape even whilst empty. Originally these packages were packed with tobacco, not merely filled with loose flakes. This can be achieved by using a piece of 1-1/2″ dowel and pressing your preferred blend into the tube, right up to the top. The package is then shut according to the paper pre-folds on the end and sealed with a dab of glue. (see photos) You can apply some moderate pressure to the end afterward in order to get the somewhat “smashed” look of it being done with mechanical pressure as it was in the day. (be careful not to crush the edge of the tube)

About 35 years of ago we had the rare opportunity to purchase a collection of original Civil War era tobacco packages in complete condition with tobacco still in them. We intended to eventually reproduce some which we did, specifically for our pards through our pioneering field sutlery, exclusively provided through and for the Army of the Pacific. A few decades later and multiple challenges with tobacco regulations, we gave up trying to sell them complete with the goods inside, even for display purposes. We refused to sell the labels alone, as we had no control over the historical accuracy of packages they were being slapped on. (period packaging and labeling has been a passion of ours since the beginning) Several vendors were seen selling various products at events with publicly available labels that were an absolute aberration as it relates to any other authentic feature. As an alternative to meet the important need for the discerning members of our community, we developed methods to produce completed packages in a form that allowed for the customer to fill the package and close it for event use and preserving the integrity of our research and lifetime of investment in mid 19th c. material culture. After a several years hiatus, this package is but the first in a renewed effort to again fulfill this desire. We have made them with interior structure that will additionally facilitate for the possibility of re-filling as well.

We have hesitated many times when considering these projects. Because of our longstanding passion for historically authentic packaging and labeling, we continue to address challenges concerning the unscrupulous reproducing of our copyrighted design work and outright theft of decades of research, investment in artifacts, countless trials and prototypes, etc., etc., by people lacking in the most common levels of decency and character. Some relatively recent reports have indicated vain and ego driven comments concerning our work by other vendors and self-proclaimed internet forum experts saying “anyone can slap a label on a reproduction and sell it – that doesn’t make it special”. The abundance of ignorance defined by such comment is placed squarely front and center by even a cursory examination here. Our packaging and labeling is a result of decades of dedication of time and treasure in order to produce the most historically detailed result for our living history and museum customers.

We continue to offer a gift card as reward for any new information identifying anyone engaged in unauthorized copying of our label designs, pirating our products or reselling them for profit.

This product is LIMITED TO TWO PACKAGES PER CUSTOMER PER ORDER – FOR YOUR PERSONAL LIVING HISTORY USE.

Identical in configuration down to the smallest detail of folding of the paper on our original mass produced consumable artifact, is this cylindrical Civil War era package for Hoyt’s Smoking Tobacco.
