Purchased with a somewhat large collection of period flasks out of Kentucky a couple of decades ago is this rare Confederate Veteran attributed flask. Large size cupped style flask of the period this is Olry’s patented flask and so marked on the base of the glass bottle and the top of the pewter screw cap. Made in the same common style as pre-war and wartime flasks, this is one of the earliest post-war productions patented and dated in 1866, while the US troops still occupied the southern states. The leather top dried out and the stitching is all gone – many flasks are found with the leather simply missing as it got wet, then shrunk, etc. The owner evidently saw some value in keeping it together as the leather pieces are now bound in place wrapped partially with heavy saddle stitching thread. The soft pewter cup has dings and dents and plenty of patina and age. The flask is sound and complete and still shows evidence of it’s final contents. Likely drained by the man himself. Completely untouched as found. When purchased and brought home for inventory a scrap of paper was discovered inside the cup cut from an 1874 daily diary. One side is the original pencil diary entry reading about something to do with “plowed corn”. The other side, also in pencil in a different hand reads “Carried by Grandpa Rimel in the Civil War 1862. Lt. Isac (sic) Rimel, Missouri 3rd Cavalry Batt.” Of course the writer is mistaken as the flask was not carried in the Civil War by Rimel since it is c.1866 at the earliest, however, it undoubtedly belonged to him and they knew his history, at least verbally. Note dates obviously to after he possessed the flask maybe nearer to his death in 1920, written by a someone who knew him, on a scrap of diary likely also in his effects. CS records indicate Isaac Rimel was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Co A of the MO 3rd Battalion Cavalry on August 10, 1861. At least one CS record also has him\u00a0 commissioned into Co G 1st Mo Infantry, the same day. (likely a later mistake as he could not have served in both at the same time and the note confirms the Cavalry commission) He was wounded at Corinth, MS in October 1862. No discharge date given. He was born in Cooper County, MO in 1839, died in Clark County, KY in 1920 and now buried in Wichita, KS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
