Sack Coat, Blue Jean Wool
Sack Coat, Blue Jean Wool
Description
Virtually the same pattern as a well documented private purchase officers sack coat, the form for which was basically copied from a common civilian coat. Standard falling collar pattern with five button front, giving the wearer the option to wear it with the top button open and the lapels laid back or button the whole way up for better protection. The versatile coat is made of sturdy, rich hand dyed indigo blue jean wool. I really love this coat and material! The rich indigo blue dye gives it the maximum versatility in an impression. It is certainly appropriate as a civilian coat yet, with added eagle buttons, is also a great representation of a private purchase campaign coat for the officer wanting maximum durability, or the private soldier wishing to represent a commercial manufactured example of the many experimental coats and materials tried during the period, which included blue jean wool. One exterior breast pocket and two lower exterior pockets. (these coarse jean wool products are made specifically to represent the less refined production of the period and minor weaving anomalies, etc. should be expected. This particular color is also hand dyed using period methods and as a result may have some intended color variations) Our own hand cut and drilled wood dish coat size buttons down the front and smaller dished wood buttons on the sleeve as pictured. All button holes are hand sewn. Interior is lined in unbleached muslin cotton and has one inseam breast pocket. Sleeves are are also lined in unbleached muslin. Cuffs, which have a three buttons pattern each, are fully functional. You can keep your coat on, roll up your sleeves and get to work! Marked for Noah Walker of Baltimore, who advertised as dealing in “Citizen’s” and “Ready Made Clothing” and a myriad of other goods. He enjoyed wartime contracts and several military contracts in the pre-war period as well. His domicile in Baltimore makes him an appropriate producer for goods utilized on both sides of the MD line. NOTE: These coats are not sized according to modern standardized models which include “vanity inches” in the process. The actual measurement of the chest of these coats at the armpit is only 1 to 1-1/2″ greater than the chest size. This coat has straight side seams with no fitted waist taper – it is a true “sack” coat. The sack coat was generally designed to fit more loosely than the common coat, thus the straight side seam, but many period photos do show them being worn quite tightly. Although our clothing items have found widespread approval – uniforming and outer clothing is not our primary business and until now we have restricted sale of such items to over the counter sales at events and at the shop, where the purchaser has the opportunity to try on the item before purchase. We take no orders for clothing to be made. PLEASE disregard modern sizing models when considering a purchase and instead utilize the actual garment measurements provided in the item description, against the actual measurements of your torso with the clothing on you wish the coat to fit over, prior to purchase. If you are unsure please email us with questions. Important Note: Our production of this popular particular color of jean wool material involves a hand dying process and, just as in the day, this does result in some degree of variation in shades from lot to lot. This means that two different clothing items of the same material in our inventory may not necessarily “match” perfectly, especially if they were made season over season. (In some cases the difference can be obvious) If you are wanting clothing made from the exact same dye lot to make a matching suit of clothes, please inquire before purchase and also specify in notes with order. If trying to match a piece of clothing already purchased more than 6 months ago it is highly unlikely we will have perfectly matching inventory available. This variance was common in the day, even in contract uniform production. The common man did not care with such utility types of garments.
