Pottery Dish, “Bennington” Spongeware (C546)

$52.95

Description

Brown and creamy yellow sponge patterned pottery, commonly known as “Bennington” amongst collectors based on its New England origins, was first developed in the late 18th century in the United States.  It’s popularity quickly spread and by the time of the Civil War was found throughout the country on both sides of the line. It is still being produced today, although the difference between 19th century pieces and the more modern examples are readily discernable to experienced collectors and dealers and has become highly collectible. This is a nice sized piece (see photos) with good patina and character. Sometimes referred to as a bowl but actually the more rare deep dish, as the sides are not curved and has a wider flat bottom with slightly raised “feet”. Sound with no cracks.
