Description
A real veteran piece. This was once the high-grade example of the traveling Razor Strop/Shaving Kit of the 1850-1860s. Made by several different companies during the period, this one by John Atwell of Wakefield Mass., these were very popular with soldiers and sailors alike as it allowed them to keep their items together as opposed to the strop alone. Honestly used and soiled this example has wonderful patina and displayable character. Case length label on one side mostly intact and readable including instructions for use with Sperm Oil and a federal eagle with shield. Tin lined compartment with tin pull drawer and little wood block candle holder complete with original owners razor. Razor has horn handle which has become well worm eaten over the years and the blade is stained with age and the edge is a bit nicked up. Despite the age, it is evident that it was clearly originally a higher grade piece in the marketplace. It is heavily stamped “LICOT NAMUR”. (Initial research indicates this was a fine French/Belgian maker operating in the pre-war period whose original founder died in 1865. Items made by the firm included razors, cutlery, and knives and swords – with many examples for the military market) The leather covered strop, which has different sides for different purposes according to the instructions on the label is all intact with no tears. (complete clean text of these instruction labels without the wonderful age this one has are available online if one desires to see it) The wood paddle handle is complete with no cracks and also has a wonderful rich patina. This piece really speaks of it’s history and will display very well. From a family history collection which included Civil War Naval and Army veterans and identified artifacts, but unfortunately neither specifically named to this particular piece. (some light letter scratching may be on razor handle but I cannot read it) This is the one for the collector who loves history and wants to display the character of it. In my opinion, as a collector of history, much better than the mint unused condition examples! A great display piece.
