M1839 Belt Plate, Small (C768)

Description

This is the M1839 Belt plate in the small pattern for the narrow waist belt and also sometimes used on shoulder straps for dragoons. The first m1839 plate had iron wire hooks that proved to not be durable enough for extended field service. In 1844 they were changed to the hook setup seen here with a brass hook and single arrow design. (the two arrow, or “puppy paw” design came in with the larger plate in the 1850s) This is the plate that saw Mexican War service throughout the frontier. These plates also saw service in state Militia organizations and early war units. Stamped brass oval plate with US in the center, lead filled back with brass hook and arrow type fastener. Letter “A” seen carved in back, possible other marks but ineligible. Patina on front with minor dings as seen in photos. Overall, very good shape for an issued and used buckle. Found in family collection in central western Missouri.
