Description
Very clear glass plate image of woman and child, c. 1860s. Typical grim faces but in this case may be warranted. Woman appears to be in staged mourning attire with black dress and white laced collar. Girl has black and white print dress with black mourning trim at shoulder and black hair ribbon. Very light tinting on cheeks. Interior gold metal frame is in excellent condition with no bends or creases, only a few spots of discoloration. Inside of case is clean and the pressed velvet pad has a nice scroll and roses pattern. Exterior of leatherette case in good condition with minor edge ware and chipping on a few corners. Clear, crisp, pressed motif on leather has scroll work, dogs and the profile of an eagle in the center with wings spread and neck craned downward. Hinge is sound and two gold metal hook and eye closures complete and in place. With the mourning attire and case motif likely the poignant image of a lost soldier’s loved ones.
