Folding “Tin” Promotional Mirror

Description
These simple and somewhat crudely mass produced little mirrors were sold in scores by sutlers and merchants alike from the early 19th century through the CW period. Found in hundreds of campsite digs and soldiers personal effects, they are highly documented as being a common period personal item. Commonly called “tin” they are actually made of thin zinc, a malleable material being the same thin lightweight metal that most of the 19th century “tin” ceiling patterns were pressed in. The case measure about 2 1/2″ across. (there was also a larger version sold during the period, a higher grade manufacture which measure about 3 1/2″) We have handled many original smaller examples and the far majority exhibit the same crude construction, a raw cut edge on one half and the other half having its edge rolled over the edge of the mirror. This process often chipped the edge of the mirrors. While field usage also provided the same result, it is also seems to be a common manufacturing flaw. (found commonly on original examples with otherwise very well preserved condition) (Please note: These faithful reproductions are made so well they have been actually mistaken for originals in our shop. They are made in the same manner as the mass production crude examples of the period and many do have minor chips on the edge of the mirror, which does not inhibit it’s function in any way. We will not accept returns for this condition which should be expected by the purchaser.) These mirrors came in all grades with fancy patriotic motifs etc., sold with a full gamut of prices, but by far this smaller simple pressed economy design is the one most often found and sold or given away as a promotional item by varied entrepreneurs. A very simple rectangular bent wire was attached to the back and the edge of the front so it could stand up for stationary use, such as shaving. A little wire ring on the back also allowed it to be hung from a nail, etc. We have examined original examples of this simple version with labels from vendors inside promoting their business and goods. (higher grade fancy and patriotic examples were also labeled, including imports, often from France) We have placed our exclusive period promotional label inside with text taken from a period vendor’s advertisement. (Some of you may remember, we made our first high grade 3 1/2″ real tin eagle motif folding mirror some 20 years ago now which also bore this label, this is a reduced copy of that label made to fit this smaller form) Sorry, we have had to limit purchases to one piece per customer in our initial offering of this product in order to preserve inventory for our wider customer base.
