Description
Entitled “A Village in the Mountains; the Conversion of Peter Bayssiere; A History of a Bible.” A nice early publication by the American Tract Society in 1850-60s. (as is the case with many ATS books not date inside frontispiece, however Bayssiere’s conversion story is dated at the end of the chapter as in 1826) The cover is pressed cloth with a design very much like one of the most common Testaments given to soldiers during the war. It is in good shape and quite sound with just few little edge nips. The pages are complete with good crisp corners. Text is good and bright with some foxing and discolorations on a few pages nearest the covers but only minor foxing throughout the rest of the book. Paper the illustrations are on has turned a darker color than the paper the text is on but print is still good.
These tracts were important part of soldier’s libraries and often offered by USCC in the camp and hospital as an alternative to the ubiquitous “Dime” novels. Published for early instruction of churched citizens and youths on the homefront. I have found many of them interesting reading.
