Description
This is a beautiful bronze religious medallion, made to be worn, and dated to the Civil War era. On the face in high relief is the Madonna seated on a throne with a crown and the crowned Christ Child lying across her lap. Around the upper edge it reads “S. MARIA DE MIRACOLI MOTTA”. On the reverse it reads “A MEMORIA DELLA CORONAZIONE FATIA E ANNO 1859”. The disc is substantial and measures 1″ across. The suspension is cast with the medallion with a unique twist to facilitate it being hung on a chain or ring laying flat. I would say definitely an item made for a man. This exact piece was featured on Worthpoint’s website as the cached photo can still be seen online. It does not indicate when they had it in their collection but the marks and stain undoubtedly identify it as being the exact same piece. We purchased from a private collector. A quite rare item and very rare to find anything like it with an actual date. The only one I’ve seen – never expect to see another. An important personal item of the Civil War era and collectible in several different genre.
