Description

Here is a multi-purpose syringe in mint condition for your medical display. Goodyear 1851 patent marked and maker marked for “I.R. COMB Co.” (India Rubber Comb Company, c 1856) This was likely an irrigating syringe based on our research but also could have other applications. (see Woshner, IRGPCW, pages 218-229 picture quite a few types, including this one) It has a smooth end and simple cap enabling it to have any number of friction type adaptations affixed to it. (irrigation syringes also used a soft rubber cap nozzle that simple stretched to fit over the end, sometimes with hoses and soft rubber end nozzles of various shapes at the end of the hose. They had many applications from wound cleansing to cleansing and application of medicines to sensitive or delicate areas) The plunging rod also has a retaining sleeve over it for an unknown purpose – possibly to keep the handle from slipping out when not in use and breaking off. The end of the rod is threaded and has a rubber nut on it to affix a plunger seal to it to push the fluid. I believe these were available in quantities and made separately for different applications so as to not cross contaminate solutions and to replace when the seal began leaking. This piece is in mint unused condition. Quite rare! (CWPG last price $80.00-120.00)
