Jappanned Tin “SEGAR” Case
Jappanned Tin “SEGAR” Case
$19.95
Description
Hinged back tin case with typical simple construction of mass produced period items such as the small tin boxes made for a plethora of applications, tobacco, writing supplies, etc.. We have inventoried several original, attributed, and so constructed, pocket cigar cases. Jappanning, a colored baked lacquer/varnishing technique, was the universal inexpensive method utilized to prevent rust on tin and also took on quite decorative airs in many genre utilizing gold powders and paints with stencils, etc. Found most commonly found in shades of brown from light honey color to dark rich walnut, but also occasionally seen in blue and green. As an actual rust preventative it proved more decorative as it is not a particularly heavy or thick coating. Of course as a result the result is minor scratching, etc, to the surface from storage and handling universally seen on japanned tinware, now just as 150 years ago. It is not intended for abrasive cleaning. Our tin is jappanned utilizing documented period methods and then gold powder coated with the popular Civil War era spelling for the vernacular term for the cigar inside a decorative frame. The back sports a label from a period tin maker right here in Fort Scott with an advertisement for related products. The interior is lined in thin paper to protect the cigars and a patriotic label is pasted inside the lid. Currently available labels include Federal Eagle with ribband, Eagle with US Flag, the Confederate States Seal, and a Lincoln caricature with the words “A Fine Long Segar”. PLEASE: Specify which label desired in comments with your order or we will choose. The box measures measure 2 1/2″ x 7″ x 1/2″ thick. Fits the popular period Marsh Wheeling, established 1840, among other documented era cigars. (happens to be my cigar of choice – not too harsh – easy to light in the saddle and stays lit, to boot!) The case fits nicely in the breast pocket, boot top, or wherever you like. CIGARS NOT INCLUDED.
