Description

A rare turned screw top wood cased pocket icon with wonderful patina and lustre. More commonly found in a brass slip case, but relatively rare none the less. (here priced at about half of retail on the more common type) These little cased pocket statues, associated with Catholic believers primarily, have been documented in the personal effects of Civil War soldiers and dug at documented CW sites. The wood case is finely made with the same type of high quality craftsmanship seen in period rosewood pocket inkwells. It is light maple colored wood with very nice patina and darkening from handling, etc. The statue is that seen on page 157 of Volume II of Lords Civil War Collector’s Encyclopoedia. We have handled a couple dozen of these over the years and this is only the second time we have found this more rare icon. While I have seen the wood case once in a well documented collection, this is the first we have ever had to offer. Ryker case included.
