Hand Finished Cotton/Muslin Shirt – Southern Maker
Hand Finished Cotton/Muslin Shirt – Southern Maker
Description
An unbleached cotton/muslin shirt in a standard period pattern with falling square collar and gusseted sleeves. Two nice big breast pockets. All of the button holes and all of the visible top-stitching on this shirt is hand done resulting in a great looking, piece work type, hand finished common shirt. The visible hand stitching is done with a heavy coarse thread and creates a somewhat decorative element as seen on some period shirts. High quality polished bone buttons. Stamp marked inside the collar for documented pre-war and wartime maker/dealer N. C. Folger of New Orleans. Folger was listed in NO as early as 1850 with adverts as a “Dealer in Plantation Goods” and “Ready Made Clothing”. It is possible that slave labor was utilized in the manufacture of at least some of his goods. The business name survived the war and was still listed as selling clothes partnered with another named firm in the 1870s. To provide a reasonably priced quality shirt with a great look and no sacrifice of authenticity is our goal. The unseen seams are machine sewn as was the majority of shirts of the period but being thus made does not re-tract in any way from the desired look of less refined construction. We are very excited to offer you this detailed and hand top-stitched shirt with a great rural look without you having to sell the shirt off your back to afford it!
