Sometimes also identified as the Stuart Pattern sword hanger, this hanger was attributed to having been developed by J.E.B. Stuart prior to the opening of the war. Instantly converts any belt to a sword belt. This, a copy of the earlier productions, along with similar configurations, were utilized throughout out the war and later adapted by the US Army in the immediate postwar era. Some modification of it stayed in service at least through 1902. The original idea was simple; to provide a belt hanger for the sword which could stay attached to the sword scabbard and be completely removed in one action, even without removing the belt if so desired. Consists of a sheet brass hook with two slots that have the leather sword straps attached. The other ends attach to the scabbard with standard two sided brass button closure. The sheet brass hook fits over the belt with the end on the outside and is very easily placed and removed, and the position adjusted by merely sliding it frontward or backward. A very common practice and/or manufacture feature was to bend the long end of the sheet brass hook back up, forming a hook to hang the sword/saber on when dismounted, seen in picture #5. (don’t hook your sword/saber when mounted, unless you want to risk a broken rib or two – I know, you’ll never go down!) We have examined many original examples of this item and found them with the hook bent and without – the original design specifically to be providing ease in immediately removing the saber and the encumbrance of the dangling straps following dismounting.
