Tobacco Pouch, D.B. Camp

Description

Hand made oil cloth, machine stitched tobacco pouch. Oil cloth is made of bed ticking and has a nice deep brown tone. Folds over twice with a half flap and ties closed with a brown herring bone cotton tape. The flap has an added piece of maroon oil cloth embossed with the word “TOBACCO” and the interior bears the advertising label of documented wartime goods dealer D. B. Camp, of Svannah. Period broadsides indicate he dealt in fine tailored clothes and CS officer’s uniforms, common “Ready Made” clothing as well as India Rubber goods and waterproofed items. A consumable type promotional give away with certain purchases, a common practice for many vendors during the period. This is not the fancy patented metal clasping well to do man’s pouch – this is a mass produced common type of tobacco pouch yet mad with the class and craftsmanship indicative of the era. (nothing cheap about trying to locate and reproduce these rare consumable examples of the CW era material culture today! – another collaborative effort with Mr. Marsh, exclusively with SoFS) Holds about as much tobacco as common modern package of modern pipe tobacco. Pipe shown is not included.
