Description
After a short hiatus and repeated requests from customers, we have again decided to offer our longtime line of pocket knives on our website, previously available for the last twenty years in the field and our shop. The Union Knife Company produced both this pocket knife and the “ARMY” knife fork and spoon combination during the wartime period. (along with other folding and fixed blade knives, etc) Basically it is the knife portion of the combination utensil with pinned dark hardwood handles on both sides. Steel bolster, spring and blade. Overall length is 8″. (Note: We have been advised of blog blather and website claims that the fingernail groove on folding knife blades is anachronistic to the CW era. This is utter nonsense and even a cursory look at knowledgeable sources would confirm so. While we have no problem with the idea that not all knives of the mid-nineteenth century may have sported the convenience, and that reproductions that do not either are not incorrect, they were a commonplace feature in period production and to suggest otherwise, by whatever motivation, is simply wrong and does not serve the living history community fairly) Our blades are company stamped near bolster as the original we examined. Most period items of this type are crudely stamped when they are marked, with light unreadable markings, partial stamps, double stamps, etc. The occasional well stamped original knife, utensil, etc., is a prized item among collectors but unfortunately has become considered the norm by many living historians and vendors when utilized for reproduction, having them meticulously stamped and then selling that point. We have chosen to mark our reproductions as the majority of originals are found, using the same crude hand stamping process. Utilizing this more crude method results in marks more consistent with the far majority of original items we have examined, leaving the same partials, light stamps, some portions unreadable, double stamps, occasionally a clear stamp, etc. They are sold in the package you get what you get – the same that they got in the day – a functional knife for a reasonable price. (please do not order our knife if you are looking for a perfectly full, legible and readable mark on the blade – it may happen – but that would be by definition rare) It comes wrapped in our own treated paper to prevent moisture, copied from original period wrappers, with a label affixed for the well known pre-war and wartime American maker. (we have faithfully reproduced this paper which we have examined in use wrapping original knives, small tools, metal hardware, etc. as packaged from original makers) A solid good looking folding knife at an excellent price. Note: The blades on these knives are very sharp and the spring mechanism is strong and tight opening and shutting them until broken in on most of them. Please be very careful. By purchasing this product online the customer certifies that he or she is 18 years of age, and agrees that The Sutler of Fort Scott, LLC assumes no liability for personal injury to the purchaser or others as a result of it’s use or handling. I am sorry but we have had to now limit purchases to two pieces per order as we are again experiencing purchases of our consumable products in quantity and reports of them being resold, with our labels and packaging, at a premium by unscrupulous blanket type vendors, depriving our individual living history customers of the opportunities to buy our museum quality items at our reasonable prices. We are not a sutler supplier, we are the sutler. We do not work hard at our research and development on your behalf, while keeping costs as low as we reasonably can, in order to provide our products for the lazy to profit from at your expense.
