Ink Pot

Description

Another stationer’s item from the inventory of my merchant ancestor, doing business throughout the pre-war and wartime period. Not made as a re-sealable inkwell but a ceramic pot made for mixing or pouring a useable amount of ink specifically for the tasks at hand. This was common item for use with powdered and cake/tablet inks during the period. One mixed the amount they determined they would need (or sometimes poured from a re-sealable master ink) used it, and then cleaned it for the next job. Could be used for multiple colors and negated the need for multiple re-sealable inkwells. The downside of course was wastage of left over ink. (which made the re-sealable pocket ink well also popular amongst line soldiers in the ranks who could less afford to discard unused ink) A great companion piece to our powdered ink and fits nicely in the kit. Made of heavy handmade cardstock formed into a cylinder with a cardstock slip cover lid, coated and bearing S.M. Ringwalt’s label. (this lid is a protective cover only and does not provide a seal in any manner) The base of the cylinder is weighted with sand so it is not top heavy and more easily tipped over. White porcelain pottery cup. Just the ticket for those who do not have the means or the desire to carry any liquid ink for re-use.
