Standard smaller size badge for kepi, sometimes also found on original slouch and civilian type brimmed hats. Gold bullion wire oval on black velvet cloth. In center is gold bullion Artillery device. This is a documented variant type badge with a red ribbon backed circle in the center so the officer could place the number of his regiment without the expense of a special made badge. (regulation called for the number of the officers regiment to be displayed in silver “at the intersection of the crossed cannon”. (Junior officers, especially those promoted from the ranks, merely applied the metal number either in silver or just brass) Badge is backed with black muslin and labeled for J. Groosman, a pre-war and wartime dealer in military and fraternal organization regalia. Comes in a paste board box also labeled for the dealer. Interior of box has our signature period, tissue thin, brown paper – copied after examining multiple period boxes and packaged items.
