Hat Badge, Artillery, Variant
$7.95
Description
Standard larger size badge for the front of the Army Hat, also generally used on the slouch and civilian type brimmed hats although the smaller kepi sized badges are also found on some original examples of these private purchase chapeaus. Gold bullion wire oval on black wool felt cloth. In center is gold bullion Artillery crossed cannon. This is a documented variant type badge with a red ribbon backed circle in the center so the officer could place the number of his regiment without the expense of a special made badge. (regulation called for the number of the officers regiment to be displayed in silver “at the intersection of the crossed cannon”. (Junior officers, especially those promoted from the ranks, often merely applied the metal number either in silver or just brass) Badge is backed with black muslin and tagged for James C. Ritchie, a pre-war and wartime dealer in military and fraternal organization regalia. Comes in a paste board box also labeled for the dealer. Interior of box has our signature period, tissue thin, brown paper – copied after examining multiple period boxes and packaged items. Note: This is left over from our very popular event only tent stock and may or may not be re-stocked depending on demand.
