Folding Pocket Corkscrew (C237)
Folding Pocket Corkscrew (C237)
$36.00
Description
Higher grade steel pocket corkscrew, originally nickel plated to prevent rusting. Could stand a light cleaning with a little steel wool for use, or display as is. Retains about 50% original finish with a few brown discoloration age marks. Well documented item among soldiers personal effects and the corkscrew was an essential item for the period culture. Solid cut very stout screw. This has the higher grade locking tumbler mechanism seen on some gun tools of the period. The spiral screw remains in it’s original full length, not broken and refiled as is so often is the case. This no doubt due to the very sturdy construction of quality materials employed in this example. The screw folds inside the ring to carry without damage to the bag/clothing, or inadvertent pitting of a nut whilst the owner squats by the campfire. Locked out the ring forms a handle for turning and pulling the cork which sealed the far majority of bottles of the day. A fine example, vital to the personal item display as they proliferate military dig sites and the material culture of the day . Made with the soldier or traveler in mind. (Lord’s Vol. III, pg 54, and many others)
