Matchsafe, Eagle Motif
Matchsafe, Eagle Motif
$89.00
Description
A much sought after example of the period brass match safe with the stamped eagle. This is one of the classic period items, more difficult to find, and usually brings premium prices when offered. Brass tube with oval cross section and spring loaded push button lid. Lid is fully functional with mechanism complete – certainly not always the case! The match safe was an essential for the soldier and gentlemen alike, but especially anyone who was in more constant exposure to the elements. The bottom end has the crosshatch striker, convenient for the fellow carrying the common friction match of the period which came in several varieties and designs. (often associated with earlier or higher end pieces, as opposed to the ridged groove) This safe came in several different popular motifs including an Indian Chief and hunting and fishing designs. A few of different eagle designs are well documented to the period including this one which has the eagle sitting above a single large laurel leaf. At least one source has this type placed in the immediate pre-war period. ( Lord’s, CWA, FMCW, AEU, CCW) Nice age patina and signs of genuine use – the type most desired in my opinion for a soldiers personal item display. Signs around the stamp design suggest it may actually have been either nickeled or silvered when new but patina on brass is rich and genuine. Wish it could speak. Piece is quite serviceable as well. Offered well below retail.
