Travelling/Pocket Inkwell (B917)

Description

This is the standard grade travelling pocket inkwell which became so popular during the war. Made by several makers but most prominently by S. Silliman. (their high grade inkwell was made in the barrel shape, they also made a fatter version of the standard grade along with various other accessories) The cylinder is commonly made of either rosewood or lignum vitae. Turned wood cap with interior threads. A glass vile sits on a spring inside which presses it up into the cap to seal. Inside the cap was a rubber/gutta percha piece with a little ball shape protrusion which acted as the stopple. This is almost universally gone in original examples but remains  intact in this specimen. There is a drying/impact crack in the lid which is also very commonly found but it is still sound and screws on without issue. (it is indeed very had to find this inkwell without a drying age crack, especially in the lid. Uncracked pieces generally bring premium prices above normal retail which is established more often in the more aged condition) Many also are found and yet still displayed with chips or broken/cracked glass – not here – glass looks great with a clean smooth lip. A quintessential Civil War piece for any collection or display. Nearly half of retail currently offered – with a cracked lid.
