I admit it, among several other Civil War era productions items I have been somewhat obsessed with over the years, I am a recovering barrel mustard jar hoarder. The number I have purchased, and still have is ridiculous. To me it is one of the classic and quintessential items of the Civil War camp, Sutlery, and table top scene, which transcends all but to the romantic. After being in the field on campaign for days, in camp with the same old drudgery of skilligalee and salt horse, dried beans and desecrated vegetables, what a wonderment such a bold flavor is to the lowly soldier….. ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire…maybe with a wild onion or two….a spoonful of heaven out of a little barrel from the storehouse of the God’s….. OK, ok, ok,…….this is a really nice jar – one of the better ones we have inventoried – and that is saying a lot…..trust me. Pre-war and wartime production style blown in the hinge mold with a rare clip top lip. Nice aqua color and quite clean. The relatively thin glass together with the other features indicates an early manufacture, 1840-60. This is a very nice example, with quality, type and style, well above the average and yet priced well considering.
