Early Knife and Fork, High Grade (C392)
$24.95
Description
Here is a top grade set of eating utensils. Matching knife and fork with beautiful bone handles with rich yellowing and age patina. (spoons were generally sold separately in the period) Classic early style to both pieces dating them likely from 1840-60. Very high grade steel in excellent condition. You will not find a better example for display or use. Knife is simply marked Guthner. (I have had this set for many years. Worthy of more research which could add more value. Original notes show made either by Joseph Guthner, an Austrian silversmith active from 1844-46 who also made items for the export trade and/or tied to an exporter for a Solingen firm of the same era. Not to be confused with the German maker Gunther or his partnered firms) Fork has a slight flare to the tynes, an early feature designed to keep the morsel in place and seen on high end Solingen examples from 1840 to 1860, same as the knife blade design. Some very early forks, especially European, were even more flared, later discarded in favor of a more narrow entry profile, before being straightened altogether! We have handled literally hundreds and hundreds of period eating utensils and you won’t do any better than the quality of this fine set.
