Vulcanized Rain Coat, Lined Collar
Vulcanized Rain Coat, Lined Collar
Description
Here is our latest offering for your wet weather campaign. Same pattern as our non-lined model listed in this section with the addition of a gold/tan wide wale corduroy collar. This is a feature we have observed on original examples and makes for a bit of warmth when turned up against the cold wind. The wide wale corduroy is a particularly mid 19th century material in use for the manufacture of such items. Made of a smooth supple vulcanized rubber cotton material, about the same weight and weave as the poncho of the period. All major seams, sleeve, side, and shoulder are vulcanized, not sewn. Only the edges, hems and the collar attachment are sewn. The falling collar is wide so when turned up it extends well up under the hat and protects the back of the neck. There are five large brown hard rubber four hole buttons down the front which, except for the top one, are hidden when closed by a flap in the front facing. The plain cotton side is a gray green color and the rubber is black. The rubber side is coated with a very, very fine dusting to protect from heat and humidity in storage. This gives a slight gray sheen but wears/rinses off quickly when put to use. Rubber clothing of the era was stored as well with various powders for the same purpose as accounts of unpacking such materials during the period attest. Each coat is stamped for the well documented and advertised period firm “Rubber Clothing Company” along with their pre-war patent dates. Most raincoats of the period were the same size – made to fit over outer clothing, etc. The exception being the length. We offer our coat in two lengths marked #1 and #2 respectively – typical of period sizing methods.(listed below as “Regular” and “Long” to avoid confusion when ordering) The collars are quite roomy at 21+” and the chest of both measure about 48″, tapering slightly outward the waists are about 52-54″. The overall length of the #1 from collar seam to hem is 44-45″ and the sleeve length from collar to cuff is 30+”. The #2 is overall length 51-52″ and the sleeve is 32+” respectively. The buttons can be moved to allow for at least one full additional inch for the collar, chest, and waist. A couple of original references are included with the photos. Our first run for the website – limited quantity available.
