Rare Tin Cup (C376)

Rare Tin Cup (C376)

Description

A relatively rare tin cup sought after by many collectors. We are happy to be able to offer this example in near mint condition. Sometimes called the “New England” cup and sometimes associated with early troops from the state of Massachusetts. I have also seen it associated with military hospitals and identified as a “garrison” mess cup. Consists of a tea cup shaped pressed bottom tin cup with a riveted tin handle. This example, as all we have handled or seen, is the earlier hand dipped finished tin – likely to better seal the inset rivets. There is a partial makers stamp on the base mostly unreadable through the tinning – the bottom half of “& CO.” This cup is very similar to the early federal issued and marked “G.I. MIX & CO.” cup with the only exception be a slight taper at the base, a rolled lip, and being a bit lighter weight. The raw cut edge handle and attachment  are identical. The partial mark is identical to the mark found on that cup and likely made by them as well. I have seen and inventoried this cup in documented period mess and camp sets. (most known examples are documented as being lightly and partially stamped) 99% tinning remains bright and clean. This came in the purchase of a rather advanced and extensive collection of Civil War era tinware, the previous owner identified it as a “Mass. Cup” in his inventory.  A rare opportunity for the serious collector or museum display. Less than half of retail.
