Description
A wonderful little item designed and elegantly crafted in the popular period barrel motif. (1840-1860s) Looks like maybe walnut but I am no expert on that subject. Finely made turned wood barrel with friction lid made to hold the small spool of thread, sometimes also found with loose thread as well. Pins in the top and base were designed to facilitate the spool turning inside. A little hole, representing the barrel bung with an ivory, bone eyelet facilitates thread removal whilst keeping the thread safe from entanglement, unnecessary unwinding, etc. These were found in ladies sewing baskets, housewives, etc., during the period, and make a very nice addition to the display or kit. Excellent+ condition, highly collectible in the sewing genre, bringing premium prices. With wood examples like this often at twice this price, much more for fancier types and ivory and sterling examples, here is a great opportunity to own one, actually more rarely survived, being representative of the average citizen’s/soldier’s means.
