As part of our never ending effort to provide a more diverse sampling of the  vast material culture of the Civil War era – here is our latest contribution representing another of the many hard rubber personal care items available to the citizens and soldiers of the period. This example, copied from an original, was made specifically for the large and growing military market of the mid 19th century.  Marked on one side as the original to appeal to the martial sentiment, it is emblazoned boldly with the words ARMY and NAVY. This was a common marking on many items which American producers hoped to market to the patriots of the time. (pictured in Woshner’s excellent reference on the subject) Also, as in the original, documented to The Union India Rubber Company, the other side simply reads Goodyear with 1851 date, this the most common form of this mark found on items utilizing the patent. The comb measures 5″ long and has medium fine teeth. Comes in a facsimile of period style paper wrapper with the company label. The UIRC was founded in 1848 and their products are appropriate for either side. (the Army-Navy marking was also used on products coming from England during the war and postwar period, a company being formed in London to produce items for the British military market bearing that name and moniker) PLEASE!: Help us to continue to protect our efforts on your behalf.
