A relatively rare item, this example could also just as easily date to the late 18th century as the Civil War period. Used by chemists/apothecaries to measure out medicines and various powders for medical applications. Pretty hard to find outside of specific dealers and collector’s sales. Ours came from the latter. (CWPG last listing was in the $65 range) A step above the wood version. Due to the wonderful luster and sheen of the finish I thought at first this might be a composite but the expert confirmed it is horn. (an ever so slight warp to the handle was the revealing telltale sign. Not sure what kind of horn) Nice, elegant lines to the handle, typical of the pride in craftsmanship of the period. Excellent condition. (the line down the side in the first photo is a flash anomaly, not a crack)
