These are fine genuine bone letter openers fashioned after the “bowie” style hunting knife of the pre-war and wartime period, especially in the southern states. Patterned after several documented original pieces, some possibly soldier’s carvings, these knife facsimiles were popular placed in use as a letter openers. The bone handles are two piece just as a knife would have been fashioned. The “Southern” version, although equally appropriate for the other side of the line, has one side scrimshawed with the outline of two rivets and wood grain in between. The blade is emblazoned with the documented period motif/quote found on knife blades and patriotic placards “God Armeth the Patriot” in a rolling scroll design. The “Northern” version, also an appropriate pre-war version for both geographic regions, has a plain blade and a beautiful federal eagle with olive branches emblazoned on the handle.
