This is a very unique item which may even date quite a bit earlier than the Civil War era. We purchased it in a lot of Civil War medical items from a longtime collector selling off his stuff. Consists of a flat spoon shaped spade on one end for crushing and mixing powders and pastes and the other end is a dished spoon in the same shape. The handle between is a bit thicker in the middle and tapers toward each end. It appears to be hand forged of a high-grade steel and the spoon is clearly hand hammered out on the dish side. It is deeply stamped on the back of the flat side “C._. Johnson”. (I can’t clearly read the second letter, maybe a “G”, we can find no commercial reference for this name/mark) This is a great item and would have been very handy for the fellow employed in the apothecary trade. My guess is he knew what he needed/wanted and had a blacksmith/tradesman make it for him. A unique opportunity.
