All hand sewn buttonholes on these comfortable lightweight cotton/muslin drawers. Pleated back with herring bone cotton tape tie, same as our drawers with buttons in bone, tin etc. Major seams are machine sewn as in commercially produced drawers of the period. These are equipped with Gibson’s pattern turned wood buttons and most are stamped for Southern maker D.B. Camp of Savannah, dealer in “Ready Made Clothing” for “soldiers and citizens”, but a few are stamped for Noah Walker of Baltimore. (our choice – whatever is on the shelf) Both predated the war and stayed in business throughout, extending into the post war years as well and, both had production presence and sales distribution in Richmond. (Mostly associated with coats and trousers, recently published research has again confirmed original examples extant of both shirts and drawers, with southern provenance using the Gibson button. Gibson Brothers provided a massive number of these buttons to the Richmond Clothing Bureau between 1862 and 1865) These drawers are the type made to tuck into socks coming to above the ankle – not full trouser length with a draw string. Both styles are documented to the period. They are not pre-washed, but our tests showed if they are washed properly, in cold water, either by hand or delicate cycle, and hung dry – virtually no shrinkage is evident – they are adjustable by the rear tie to compensate. We are not responsible for shrinkage which may occur utilizing laundering methods other than that suggested. (Note: With tape tied, material on either side of the split in the center of back of waist band just meeting, and the buttons buttoned, the measurement given is exact – as in original garments no 21st Century fudging here to make one feel better and enhance the sale – if you want more room or do not want to loosen the tie – please size up) Contrary to some dogma purveyors, drawers and shirts were made and even issued by certain entities made of plain common lightweight 100% cotton or muslin, just as these are. The use of flannel was not exclusive, thankfully in the summer and warmer climes.
