Description

A great piece for the display or living History demonstration. Consists of two, two sided, full size writing slates (8 x 11) in excellent aged condition with no cracks. Only a small chip in one corner of one slate. Obvious vintage with nice genuine age patina. Hinged together with two herring bone ribbons at the top and the bottom. One each are still attached at both the top and the bottom but are weak. If displaying it holds up as pictured – if using can be easily replaced to insure one does not drop a slate. It is rather difficult to locate a single slate of such vintage without cracks or significant damage – a hinged double in this condition is a real find. Wood frame edge is bound with a twisted cotton cord over soft twisted rawhide. This was designed to soften any impact in order to protect the slate from cracking and the frame from jarring apart. This is a choice item with great historical character. Slates were used for many applications, not just school work. Shops, temporary business signs, work assignments, etc. Could even be used in some administrative military application. We’ll throw in a slate pencil to go with. An important part of mid 19th century culture. (Note: the pair weigh in at about 1.5 lbs.)
