Description

A Goodyear 1851 patent marked spoon which was made for measuring in medical applications. Used as a scoop, measure, etc. Never seen another. My medical resource folks indicate they believe it was also possibly in use as an invalid feeder. Could have also been used counting pills, measuring powders, etc. Has a dished-out tab on the bowl end to hold with the thumb. The spoon end has a slight chip. Medical pieces, as well as period rubber pieces are very, very collectible, here is both genres in one!  A quite rare piece of hard rubber from the period in which an extensive number of items were patented utilizing the substance. (We highly recommend Mike Woshner’s wonderful book on the subject!) Standard Goodyear patent mark is visible on the under side of the bowl. Nice typical age and oxidation.
